The Montessori Approach
Montessori is an individual approach to education for children, that helps each child reach their full potential in all areas of life.
Montessori concentrates on the “whole” child. It is a student-centered approach that encourages creativity and curiosity, and leads children to ask questions, explore, investigate and think for themselves as they acquire new skills. The principle goal of Montessori philosophy is to develop the whole personality of the child. Each child is different and therefore should be respected for his uniqueness and ability to learn at his own pace.
The classroom, referred to as the prepared environment, offers the child an opportunity to explore his autonomy through choices.
Children are free to work at their own pace with activities they have chosen. Children are free to work alone, or in a group. The materials that are found in a Montessori classroom, are the correct manner to utilize, and the attention to detail in the environment help the child to adapt to his needs.
The Montessori director acts as a facilitator of learning.
The director will observe the classroom and ensure it is safe. That areas of interest or being updated and always providing new learning experiences for the children. She observes each child to determine their individual needs and learning style. She must tweak the Montessori environment to guide the children along their best learning paths. She will actively engage with materials and show her love of learning and embracing new ideas. An atmosphere of support and trust will be created, enabling the children to explore and discover confidently.
